Lisbon Fun Facts

Lisbon is actually older than Rome!

According to some historians around 4 centuries older making it the second oldest European capital, the first being Athens

Lisbon’s landmark icon, the Torre de Belém, was just a …

a customs office, although it did start out as a defence tower it has also been a jail, a lighthouse and also a telegraph post. Its the most attractive telegraph post Pink Monkey have seen!

The Tagus is river is Iberia's largest

At up to 14Km wide, is said to be large enough to contain all the warships in the world.  Pink Monkey cannot arrange warships but we can arrange a yacht hire on the Tagus for your Lisbon Stag Weekend or Lisbon Hen Weekend.

Lisbonians like to bath naked!

OK maybe not in this century but in previous centuries, one local tradition was for the (daring) people of Lisbon to take their weekly baths by descending the steps of the Praça do Comércio to bathe nude in the river, causing and right old scandal at the time.

Lisbonians’ are bathed in sunlight Lisbon has one of the mildest climates in Europe.

The city is considered to be the sunniest capital in Europe, with an annual average of 2900-3300 hours of sunshine.  Perfect city to hit the beach on your Hen Party in Lisbon.

The people of Lisbon are officially mad about football

Benfica football club is listed in the Guinness Book of Records for having the largest number of fans for any global football club with an estimated total of 14 million worldwide and over 170,000 registered paying supporters.  Why not join them on Stag Party in Lisbon, Pink Monkey can arrange tickets during your stay.

Lisbon was destroyed

On the 1st November 1755 as a massive earthquake hit Lisbon and very nearly destroyed it. Tipping the scales at 8.9 took the lives of 40,000 people and could be felt as far away as Scotland and Norway. The area of Alfama was the only area to remain standing. Lisbon is “the town of seven hills” Lisbon is actually built on 7 hills which are: Castelo, Graca, Monte, Penha de Franca, S.Pedro de Alcantara, Santa Catarina and Estrela.

Great Grandmother Gets a Little Cheeky!!

Great Grandmother Gets a Little Cheeky!!

83 year old Barbara Davies, of Poole, celebrated her up coming nuptials with a Vintage Themed Hen Party and a Saucy Butler in The Buff! The 26 guests were treated to Champagne by the Cheeky Buff Butler and also a game of Mr and Mrs. Since retiring at the age of 71 Barbara has travelled the world, including Vietnam, India and Indonesia. After being widowed 17 years Barbara thought her dating days were well behind her, but cupid had a surprise in store when she met her fiancé John Clode, 71, four years ago at her croquet club, Love blossomed and after getting engaged in Cyprus last summer they planned their wedding for this September, they then plan to travel the rest of the world.

Barbara said: “I guess you could say I’m adventurous but for me I just like enjoying life, travelling and I believe you can’t just sit staring at the four walls because the world is not going to come to you. For me my hen party was very special and I wouldn’t have thought in a million years I’d ever have one of these – they weren’t even invented for my first marriage. Most of my friends said they wouldn’t miss it for anything and we’ve had such a good time.”

Pink Monkey Stag and Hen LOVE this story and we salute Barbara for her young at heart attitude, after all "age aint nothin but a number!"

For all the Cheeky ladies that want to follow in Barbara's trail blazing footsteps, Pink Monkey can arrange a Buff Butler on your Hen Weekend in Lisbon or Hen Weekend in the Algarve.

Stag Party Dwarf Gets Apprehended!

Stag Party Dwarf Gets Apprehended!

Dwarfs have always been a Stag Party prank favourite but a group at York Race got a little bit more embarrassment than they paid for. The group at York Races hired "Charlie the Drarf" dressed as a Policeman to be handcuffed to the Stag, ingeniously dressed as a horse. But "Charlie" and his props didn't go down well with the local constabulary who apprehended him!

Speaking to the newspaper, Charlie said: "They said my truncheon - which I'd specially shortened - was a lethal weapon. "I was in bits. I told them, 'we're just having fun - I do this all the time'. But they told me to free Darren and took me to a room. They demanded my name and address - everything."

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police She said: “The items were genuine police issue, the baton being a prohibited item and capable of inflicting serious injuries on a person. The handcuffs were also law enforcement issue, supplied only to those with powers of detention and arrest. “There was no reason for the man to be in possession of police equipment as replica items are widely available for fancy dress purposes. While we have no doubt that the prank was good-spirited and well-intentioned, we must take the safety of members of the public seriously.” The spokeswoman also said nobody was arrested or cautioned in connection with the incident.

Pink Monkey Stag and Hen also arrange a Fancy Dress Dwarfs for your  Stag Party group in Lisbon, thankfully our don't get arrested!

How NOT to do a Stag Prank

Stag Prank Turns Into International Man Hunt!

A Stag Party group ranging in age from 25 to 35 attended a Stag Weekend in Estonia March of this year, the festivities began as normal, booze, sight seeing, booze and strippers however things turned a little sour later into the night.

As is normal within a Stag Party the group began drinking early in the day and by 11pm at night one of the group was a little worse for wear and sent home. As the rest of the Stag Party returned to their accommodation in the early hours they realised their friend had not returned. Thinking nothing of it the group carried on with their festivities thinking that he would return in his own time. However the afternoon after his disappearance they began to receive disturbing texts ...

..."Your friend is going to die!"
...."Your friend has been arrested"
and finally ..."Your friend is being held hostage and we demand a 5000 euro ransom"

Obviously the Stag Party were disturbed by this news and called in the police who then launched a huge operation including negotiators, the Estonian Foreign Ministry, The British Embassey and Manchester Police. Over the next 30 hours the police combed the area, monitored calls, search hospitals for clues to his disappearance. The police eventually found a house where they thought the Stag Party victim was being held, the police were on the verge of raiding the home when it came to light that the whole event was a ill advised prank.

The drunk stag party member was found intoxicated and lying in the snow by some wealthy and respectable businessmen who took pity on the drunk soul and took him home for more partying! Over the next booze fueled days they decided to prank his friends sending texts and pictures. The drunk stag party member cannot remember any of the events that took place, however the police did and they were all fined around 200 euros!!

Brief History of The Stag Party

So you probably think that a stag party is a pretty resent invention .. wrong!

Unbelievably it actually dates back the the 5th century B.C, ancient Spartans were the 1st to celebrate their Spartan Brothers last night of freedom. Spartan soldiers held a dinner in their friend's honor and made toasts on his behalf. But year on year stag parties have been getting more and more raucous!

Below are Pink Monkeys all time favourites:

Herbert Barnum Seeley had his stag party raided by the police in 1896 as rumours were abound that a famous belly dancer was due to perform naked ... naughty!

Jimmy Stewarts Stag party in Beverley hills in 1949 was an interesting affair. Two actors that played munchkins in the Wizard of Oz were hired, the first to dress as a baby and pee on Mr Stewart and the 2nd to call him Daddy all evening.  Later on more munchkins jumped out of a silver serving dish to the surprise of Stewart. The start of todays infamous Stag Parties Pink Monkey thinks.

Thomas Bruderman a Fidelity trader held his Stag Party in 2003 at the Delano Hotel. It cost around$100,000 and included a dwarf, a private jet, a yacht and two prostitutes ... Is that all?
