The children attend a local free youth centre, at the youth centre the children can access the internet, study, read, play games and generally hang out. The centre also provides emergency food for locals that are unable to feed themselves or their family.
The Portuguese have suffered due to the austerity (troika) cuts and many children live in direct poverty and according to unicef "about three-quarters of children live in households in which there is no adult who has a paid job are in a situation of deprivation. This means that this part of population aged 1-16 years had no access to at least two essential goods included in a longer list of 14 indicators, such as: taking three meals a day, having an access to the Internet, getting some new clothes or having possibility to celebrate some special occasions"
Pink Monkey Stag and Hen Ltd arranged a party for the local kids including games, party food and gifts of school supplies and sports equipment. Although a small gesture the children had fun for 3 hours and loved the chocolate and sweets provided a small treat that they do have access to everyday that we in the UK take completely for granted.
